Best Books for Children


To help kids develop interest in reading, they should be exposed to a lot of reading materials of all genres. From there the kids should be allowed to choose their books which they would like to read in their spare time apart from study books.

The best way to help your kids grow a liking in reading, keep age appropriate books of their choice at all placed. Seeing so many collections of books in all over the places kids are bound to take up some books to enjoy the taste of reading. There are varieties of books available for the kids. Books are available in various genres and you can choose any of the genres as per you child’s taste. No one understands children better than their parents.

1. Varieties of Books for Kids

Take out sometime to take your kids to the book stores and see what kinds of books appeals your child the most. Buy books for him or her and try to identify the characters along with your child. This will enhance his reading habits. Here are some of the names given for books of different genres which have gained popularity with time.

2. Harry Potter

One of the most famous story books, which have gained popularity among children of all age groups. Even the adults cannot resist reading the series of Harry Potter. Written by the famous writer J.K.Rowling, this is one of the best sellers of recent times. Almost every kid must have read the series at least once. It is an adventure based story and has seven stories in its series. The story revolves around a small boy named Harry who discovers in his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard. Soon he is sent to the famous Hogwarts magic school. How he revenges against the evil named Voltemont with two of his friends Hermione and Ron is the subject of the story.

3. Jungle Book

This famous Children’s book is written by Rudyard Kipling and is one of the favourites of the kids. It is a story about a small boy named Mowgli who adapts himself with the environment of the jungle. He makes all the animals his friends. Children love to read this book as this has a special mention of animals. This book was first published in 1894 by MacMillan Publisher and is also aired in television as cartoon.

4. Oliver Twist

This is a fiction written by Charles Dickens and was published in 1837.This is a story of an orphan named Oliver who starts from a workhouse and later works as an apprentice. He escapes from there and goes to London. There he meets a gang of juvenile pickpockets and becomes one of them. This story describes the criminals and their sordid lives, the cruel treatment of orphans in London in the mid nineteenth century and how the children were recruited as criminals.

5. Gulliver Travels

This is a satire written by Jonathan swift and was published by Benjamin mote. This fantasy is about a man called Gulliver who loves to travel to countries, and his love of travelling leads him to a lot of troubles. He lands into a country of Lilliput after the ship wreckage and how to manage to stay there is the plot of the story.

6. Winnie-the-Pooh

This is a Disney Creation, written by AA Milne and E.H Shepherd Egmont. This story is loved by the children as it portrays a honey munching Bear’s appeal.

7. Treasure Island

This is an adventure fiction written by R.L. Stevenson. This is one of the most frequently dramatised novels. The story revolves around a young boy called Hawkins who manages to put his wits against the pirates to discover Captain Flint’s hidden treasure of gold. This story was first published in the Children’s Magazine named “Young Folks”.
There are also other genres of stories for kids. But small kids love to read fantasies and fairy tales. Later when they grow up and start to understand things they become more drawn to adventure stories and detective series. So it is always better to leave the kids with their own choices and let them pick up their own favourite books.
